One day while researching about different traditional masks of various regions and countries I came across Bulgaria's Kukeri. People of Bulgaria gather once every year to celebrate the Kukeri festival which marks the passing of winter & the arrival of summer fertility. Men, women and children dress up in animal masks and loud bells to participate in parades, dances and rituals - all believed to protect them from the impure powers and evil spirits in the coming year.
I was intrigued by their use of bright colours and intricate patterns on the masks, as well as what resembles long animal fur on their bodies. My decision to include a realistic eye behind the mask came from wanting to represent human beings' longing for beauty, higher power, and connection with other beings.
