Aurum is a word meaning ‘gold’ in Latin language.
My original vision for this piece did not include any gold — I saw it being more of a monochromatic piece at first. When I wasn’t completely satisfied with the final results I took a gamble and decided to add splashes of colours. I say gamble because, sometimes, one “move” can be the difference between love & hate.
The two women in the painting represent the camaraderie between two ballerinas - the cheers and support selflessly given to each other, the shared mental & physical pain that comes with striving for perfection, being the support system for one another at a time of high stress and anxiety before and during performances.
This piece also illustrates the glamours and sparkles of a ballerina on stage as well as the private, perhaps more contracted image of self when away from public view.
